Rizu’s mother remembers feeling overwhelmed and helpless because she could not always understand exactly what her almost three-year-old’s needs were and had very limited support from extended family members, who just couldn’t relate.
Rizu’s mother was concerned about his behaviour and speech development, especially after hearing feedback from his preschool teachers echoing the same sentiment. Rizu struggled to engage in conversational exchanges with adults and to speak in full sentences. Additionally, he had underdeveloped cognitive, gross, and fine motor skills as assessed by Occupational Therapists from KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital.
Thankfully, Rizu’s mother was referred to a Care Corner KidSTART Social Worker who was able to holistically evaluate their unique situation and connect the family with all of the services required without an immense financial burden.
As a part of the Care Corner Learning and Special Needs Support Intervention Programme (LSN-IP), Rizu now receives Educational Therapy, Occupational Therapy (OT), along with Speech and Language Therapy. During his sessions, Rizu engages in physical exercises such as balancing, climbing, and throwing balls. He also works with learning and special needs specialists on routine-based exercises such as:
- using utensils when eating,
- screwing and unscrewing items to build fine motor and coordination skills,
- packing and unpacking belongings to gain a greater sense of self awareness.
In terms of speech development, both Rizu’s mother and his preschool teacher noticed significant improvements. Rizu’s mother appreciates the regular observational notes and feedback from his therapists as it helps her continue on with the work at home and truly target the areas needing attention and further fine-tuning.
Rizu and his mother are currently on a positive path forward and better equipped with the tools, skills, and the support necessary to ensure future success.
About Care Corner Learning and Special Needs Intervention Programme
Care Corner Learning and Special Needs Intervention Programme (LSN-IP) is targeted particularly at young children aged 3 to 9 years of age with developmental and learning difficulties. Allow us to help match your child to a therapist to do the professional work, and support you in creating a supportive home environment for your child.
This could include setting up a daily routine for them, creating a calm and consistent environment, and providing plenty of opportunities for your child to explore and learn. Your home is your child’s sanctuary, and it should be a safe space for them to fully express themselves and their emotions.
Through the dynamic combination of professional therapy and a safe and nurturing environment at home, your child would be able to feel guided and understood in their journey.
It is not too late to take action now, contact us at 6235 2585 or lsn@carecorner.org.sg.
