ELDER CARE SERVICES

As Singapore ageing society increases, the dire need to deliver quality eldercare services has been a key focus among many VWOs (Voluntary Welfare Organisations).

Care Corner has been a forerunner in providing comprehensive eldercare services to the public since the early 90s. In 1992, Care Corner introduced its first elderly daycare centre (now known as ‘Social Day Care for the Elderly’) to support the needs of busy families who are unable to care for their elderly family members while they are at work.

In 1999, Care Corner successfully launched a second eldercare programme (Seniors Activity Centre) in Toa Payoh estate. However, the focus of the new programme was slightly different as it was more inclined towards the needs of the low-income elderly living in the area. Built as a community-based drop-in centre, it offers a series of holistic eldercare programmes that are designed to keep the elderly mentally and socially engaged.

Towards the late 90s, HDB launched the Studio Apartment Scheme which was widely popular among elderly who are living alone.

‘Neighbourhood Link’, a new concept that was launched by MCYS to promote inter-generational interaction among residents living in the same neighbourhood soon became complimentary to this new breed of HDB dwellers.

Soon after, Care Corner was appointed by MCYS (Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports) to operate a neighbourhood link at Golden Lotus Apartment in Toa Payoh. On 30 March 2002, Care Link was officially opened by Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, the acting Minister for Community Development and Sports.

The centre aspires to become a focal hub where residents regardless of age can mingle and network together through a broad range of activities and community services.
